Just For Fun: Give These Uniquely-Patterned and Brightly-Colored Nudibranchs A Common Name

Nudibranchs are not just colorful some species are also uniquely patterned. Here are some of the most beautifully and brightly-colored species of sea slugs which are uniquely-patterned.

Just for fun name that nudibranch. Only 3 of the 16 sea slugs on the list have their “common or informal names”. If you are to give these animals their “common names” what will these be? For example, I will call number one, Halgerda batangas – Batangas Nudibranch simply because it occurs in the Philippines and Batangas is one of its provinces.

You’ve seen the most beautifully and brightly colored sea slugs in my articles entitled “Colorful Underwater Creatures Called Nudibranchs: The Spotted Ones” and “World’s Most Brilliantly Colored and Striped Sea Slugs “. Now it’s time to meet the uniquely patterned ones.

Nudibranchs are not just colorful some species are also uniquely patterned. Here are some of the most beautifully and brightly-colored species of sea slugs which are uniquely-patterned.

1.) Halgerda batangas

Halgerda batangas is a colorful and uniquely-patterned sea slug species that can be found in the waters of the Philippines and nearby countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan and others. This sea slug is one of a group of mainly white species of Halgerda with orange markings. Halgerda batangas is characterized by a network of fine, solid, red-orange lines on the mantle.

2.) Halgerda guahan

Like the Halgerda batangas, the Halgerda guahan is also a colorful and uniquely-patterned sea slug species. This lovely-looking nudibranch, which is characterized by network of yellow lines on the mantle, belongs to the Dorididae.

3.) Halgerda willeyi

Halgerda willeyi is a large and uniquely-patterned species of sea slugs. This halgerdid which is characterized by soft curves and different colors can grow up to 5 cm in length. It inhabits the Indian and Pacific oceans from Taiwan down to the continent of Australia.

4.) Hepselodoris zephyr

This Hypselodoris zephyr, a colorful sea slug species, looks attractive with its unique pattern. This nudibranch can be found in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.

5.) Nembrotha chamberlaini

Many Polyceridid, like the Nembrotha chamberlaini, are very colorful and uniquely-patterned. This nudibranch species inhabits the waters of the Philippines and Indonesia. This sea slug is remarkable for the white with streaks of black mantle. Its gills are noticeable bright red.

6.) Nembrotha rutilans

Another colorful Polyceridid is the Nembrotha rutilans. This colorful and uniquely-patterned sea slug species inhabits the tropical waters of Indian and Pacific oceans. This species is now known as known as Nembrotha purpureolineata.

7.) Nembrotha purpureoli

One more colorful and uniquely-patterned nudibranch that belongs to the Polyceridae family is the Nembrotha purpureolineata. It is a sea slug species that lives in the Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.

8.) Notodoris minor

Yellow-colored animals are simply captivating and beautiful like the Notodoris minor. This brightly-colored and uniquely-patterned sea slug species belongs to the Aegiretidae family. This nudibranch, which can grow up to 14 cm long, is characterized by its yellow background color and a pattern of diagonal and transverse black lines arranged in a network covering the entire body. It inhabits the Philippines and nearby countries.

9.) Tambja gabrilae

The Tambja gabrielae may not be as brightly-colored as the other species on this list but it is surely unique for its remarkably noticeable patterns. It has bright yellow or orange spots and thick lines on its dark green mantle. This sea slug in the Polyceridae family can be found in the Philippines, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.

10.) Ceratosoma trilobatum

The brightly-colored and uniquely-patterned Ceratosoma trilobatum is a sea slug species that belongs to Chromodorididae family. This colorful dorid nudibranch lives in the Pacific Ocean.

11.) Hypselodoris bullockii

This blue violet colored nudibranch is scientifically named Hypselodoris bullock. It is a colorful and attractive se slug species that belongs to the Chromodorididae family. This sea slug lives in the tropical western Pacific Ocean and part of Indian Ocean.

12.) Chromodoris tinctoria

The brightly-colored Chromodoris tinctoria looks pretty with its red-colored with small white spots mantle and white underside. This colorful sea slug species belongs to the Chromorididae family.

13.) Doriopsilla albopunctata

The colorful Doriopsilla albopunctata is characterized by yellow colored mantle with tiny whit dots. This sea slug species that can be found from California to Mexico belongs to the Dendrodorididae family and can reach a length of 6 cm. This brightly-colored nudibranch can be yellow, brown or orange-yellow.

14.) Orange-peel Doris (Acanthodoris lutea)

This is one of the most beautiful orange-colored animals. The brightly-colored Orange-peel Doris is a colorful sea slug species of the Onchidorididae family is the largest of the northeastern Pacific acanthodorids. This nudinranch is remarkable for its bright coloration. This sea slug inhabits the Pacific coast of North America. When handled, it secretes a noxious metabolite which is toxic. The bright coloration of this animal is a reminder to would-be predators of its distasteful nature.

15.) Spanish Dancer (Hexabranchus sanguineus)

The lovely-looking Spanish Dancer is a colorful and very large species of sea slug. This strong-swimming nudibranch of the Hexabranchchidae family can be found in the tropical waters of Indian and Pacific oceans. It can be found also in the Mediterranean Sea.

16.) Spanish Shawl (Flabellina iodinea)

The flamboyant Spanish Shawl is a very colorful sea slug species of the Flabellinidae family. It is endemic to the west coast of North America and further south. In addition, it also inhabits Galapagos Islands and Santa Catalina Island in California, USA.
